Perm-36. Reflexion (2016)
Synopsis
Three former prisoners speak of their time in ‘Perm-36’ gulag (now a memorial centre for the history of political repression). Years later they participate in the “Pilorama” Forum, a campsite reflecting, mirror-like, Russian society haunted by phantom pains after the fall of the Soviet Union. Red-brown activists zealously rail against the existence of the museum and the forum. They start to gain attention in society and the government. Train movement by rail is time, but it seems that the train is no longer moving forward. Distortion of historical time leads to the fact that the train picks up speed, moving backward.

Sergei Kachkin
Born in 1973 and grew up in the city of Perm. He graduated from Perm Polytechnical University and then several years later graduated from Marina Razhbezhkina’s Film School. Since 2006 he has worked as a producer, director and cameraman. In 2008 he participated in the programme «Cultural Leaders, Filmmakers » in the USA. In the following years he has taken part in many international seminars led by filmmakers Alexander Sokurov (Russia), Rafi Pitts (France); the film critic Tue Steen Müller (Denmark); the producer Iikka Vehkalahti (Finland); 2011-2015 Head of Project Department, Moscow Co-Production Forum of the Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF). In 2012 he organised an educational seminar “Flahertiana ADA Workshop”. In May of the same year the international premiere of his film “On the Way Home” took place at the Krakow Film Festival. Subsequently, the film was screened at various festivals and on television channels throughout the world. Since 2015 he has been an organizer of the «DOKer» Film Festival. In 2016 the premiere of his film “Perm-36. Reflexion” took place at the central Moscow cinema “October”, after which it was shown at film festivals, released nationally and shown at universities in Russia, Europe, the USA and on TV.

Несмотря на своё название, фильм получился не о конкретной зоне, а о Системе, уничтожавшей человека, его достоинство. У Сергея Качкина музей «Пермь-36» выполняет функцию инструмента – системы зеркал, в отражении которых он в разных ракурсах пытается показать зрителю не только внешность, но и нутро этой Системы. Именно тогда у зрителя, особенно молодого, и возникают вопросы, о которых до этого он мог даже не задумываться:
— За какие грехи «строители коммунизма» отправляли на лагерные нары своих несознательных сограждан?
— Каково лицо типичного «антисоветчика» (он же «узник совести»)?
— Как относится современный россиянин к жертвам и их тюремщикам?
— Как сегодня оценивает политические репрессии в СССР государство, власть?
— Типовая гулаговская зона это каторга или профилакторий?
На большинство этих вопросов внимательный зритель тут же в зрительном зале получает пусть не исчерпывающие, но наглядные ответы.

Фильм Сергея Качкина предугадал безрадостные тенденции в нашем обществе. Он точно соответствует своему названию. Впечатления автора от единственного в России музея, посвященного памяти жертв политических репрессий, расположенного под Пермью, находят отражения в восприятии художником и этого трагического места, и судеб тех, кто там сидел уже в другую историческую эпоху, на излете советской власти, и состояния сегодняшнего — и что печальнее — будущего общества.
